Birdline Fire Update

As your all aware – on March 15th Birdline suffered a tragic house that took the lives of 27 parrots and most of our home.  The loss of our friends and companions is beyond words and while we are still grieving their loss, we realize we have no choice but to carry on.

There are still so many out there waiting for us and who need our help, and to Honor those we have lost – we will do it for them.

For those who have emailed, called, texted, donated and sent cards in the mail – we THANK YOU – your kindness and love has helped us to keep our strength during this difficult time and we appreciate your support and compassion.

On Tues April 29th, we had a large group of parrots surrendered to Birdline – we had been working with this individual since January and called this grouping “CF-27” as there were 27 parrots…..

A day before we traveled to get them, 3 more were added and we ended up bringing home 30 parrots!!!

We are happy to say that we found some amazing foster families for almost ALL the birds and they are all currently having their health exams/bloodwork done.

After a minimum 30 day quarantine period – they will be placed on our website for adoption with their ages/biographies and photos.

We are still looking for some cages as well – if you have one in good shape (no rust, no missing pieces)please email us a photo of the cage and price.

At this time, bloodwork and necropsy results show NO signs of infectious disease.  The predominant issues are malnutrition and dehydration – being underweight and a lack of sociability – in time, this will change 🙂

We are still not back in our home as the demo is just wrapping up on the house – it will be months before we are able to return.

Any further intakes will be done on a case to case basis – we will need foster homes in place before any further birds can come in.  If you are interested in becoming a foster family – please visit the guardianship page and fill out an online application.

If you require any further information, please feel free to contact us at anytime info@birdline.ca

Blessings,

Anna and Steve

  • I am so incredibly sorry for what you’ve endured. My heart goes out to you.
I will help as much as I can.

    • Thank you Linda – we truly appreciate your support!

  • I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I have to ask specifically about Sparky, the African Grey Parrot. My family and I have been looking at her and talking with other owners about the full commitment and needs of a Parrot like her. We were just going to contact your organization about seeing if we could meet her. I am heartbroken for you and hope a donation will help some how. But for my families sake I just need to know if she survived the fire. We already care about her and feel some sort of attachment. Thank you for your time and again I am so very sorry for your loss.

    • Hi Ashly

Thank you for your concerns and I am happy that you are researching before bringing a parrot into your family – thats so important and will make things much better for not only you – but for the parrot – we can never learn to much 🙂
Sparky is safe and has a new loving family – we are so thankful that she found her new home before the tragedy and we thank you for your concern of her welfare and for your condolences.

As keepers of these parrots, your organization must be absolutely devastated about this fire. Please keep me informed as I would like to help in some way.

    • Hi Christine
Yes, this was a devastating thing to happen – anyone who has parrots in their home – whether its 1 or 50 – know that a fire is the worst possible scenario to go through. We thank you for posting and offerings of help. Right now we are unable to do very much – we have to stick close to the surviving 6 right now and we are unable to do anything at the house. We will not be there again for about 3 months. Once we actually obtain a rescue center, we will be calling on many volunteers and your name will be on the list 🙂

  • I am so deeply sorry for your loss. God Bless your feathered friends and my prayers are with you and the surviving 6.
If there is anything that I can do to be of help please contact me through my website.. cages, equipment, food, or even a place for some of them to call home for the time being.
    God Bless

I can’t imagine how your family is feeling after such a loss. I hope that your family and all of the parrots are doing well.
We are a parrot loving family and share our home with 4 feathered house mates. As a family we would like to offer a foster home for any of your feathered friends who need a place to stay.
We currently are guardians of 2 budgies, a cockatiel, and a Senegal, as well as our chihuahua.
Please let us know if there is any equipment or other needs we can help with as well.

  • I am so sorry that you have suffered such a loss, those parrots were lucky to have the love of good folks like yourselves. Hugs to you and prayers for the surviving “family”.

  • This is very sad story. I am sorry to read about this. I survived a house fire many years ago and know firsthand of what damage smoke can do. I am lucky to be here. Perhaps when you get up and running again I can help out. Very sorry for this terrible loss. Glenn

OMG! To Anna and Steve and the rest of the Birdline, my husband’s and I’s prayers go out to you and your family. A great sadness has fallen to learn about the parrots that have been loss. But know even though their lives were lost, at least they had a wonderful life while with you. Most of them came from not so good situations, but no doubt in my mind; know that they were loved.
Keep us all posted about updates! and fingers crossed for the remaining parrots 🙂

    • Thank you for the kind words. Its been a difficult time for us but the love and support from so many people like you has made this journey a little easier to handle. We miss them everyday…for them and so many others, we will continue to carry on..one featherbutt at a time 🙂
